Compress a video on iPhone
No app to install. Tap below, pick the clip from Photos, choose a size, then save or share the smaller MP4. The video stays on your phone the whole time.
Step by step in Safari
- Tap “choose a file”Pick Photo Library and select the clip. iPhone may say it's “preparing” the video first; that's iOS handing over the file.
- Pick a sizeDiscord free (19 MB), email (18 MB) or your own number. Trim if the clip is long.
- Tap Squeeze itKeep Safari open and the screen on until it finishes.
- Save or shareTap Share to send it straight to Messages, WhatsApp or Discord, or Save Video to put it in Photos.
Why iPhone videos are so big
Recent iPhones can record 4K at up to 60 frames per second, and Apple's camera picks high bitrates so the footage holds up when you edit it. That is great for quality and terrible for a 20 MB chat limit. Apple's own camera settings estimate roughly 170 MB per minute for 4K at 30 fps in High Efficiency, and about 400 MB at 60 fps; the same minute at 720p H.264 fits in about 20 MB.
Record smaller from now on
- Settings › Camera › Record Video: choose 1080p at 30 fps unless you need 4K.
- Settings › Camera › Formats: “High Efficiency” (HEVC) makes smaller files than “Most Compatible”.
On a Mac or PC instead? The same tool works there and is faster: see the guide for every device, or convert an iPhone MOV to MP4 without re-encoding.
Questions people ask
How do I compress a video on my iPhone for free?
Open squeezevideos.com in Safari, tap "choose a file", pick the video from Photos (or Files), choose a target size such as 19 MB for Discord and tap Squeeze it. When it finishes, tap Download or Share to save it back to Photos or send it. No app, no account, no watermark.
Does it work with iPhone HEVC (H.265) videos?
Yes. iPhones record in HEVC by default ("High Efficiency"). SqueezeVideos reads those clips and, by default, writes H.264 MP4, which plays on Windows PCs, Android phones and Discord embeds that may not handle HEVC.
Is there a built-in way to make iPhone videos smaller?
For future recordings, yes: Settings > Camera > Record Video lets you pick a lower resolution and frame rate (for example 1080p at 30 fps instead of 4K at 60 fps), and Settings > Camera > Formats > High Efficiency keeps files small. iOS has no built-in "compress to X MB" for existing clips, which is what this page does.
Why did it stop partway on my iPhone?
Safari gives each tab a limited amount of memory, and long 4K clips can exceed it. Trim the clip first, choose 720p, or compress it on a computer. Keeping the screen on and the phone cool also helps.
Will compressing remove the location and date?
The new file is a fresh MP4, so most of the original's metadata, including location, is not carried over. Photos may show the date you saved it rather than the date it was recorded.
