Why aim under the limit
Email turns attachments into text before sending, which makes them about a third bigger on the wire, and every server along the way can apply its own cap. If you don't know the recipient's provider, 18 MB (our Outlook preset) is a safe choice for almost anyone.
Your mail program's limit counts every attachment together, so if you are sending two clips, split the budget between them.
Questions people ask
What is the Gmail attachment size limit?
25 MB for all attachments in one email on a personal Gmail account. If you attach something larger, Gmail offers to upload it to Google Drive and sends a link instead.
What about Outlook and Yahoo?
Outlook.com allows 20 MB per message and Yahoo Mail 25 MB. Work accounts on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace can differ because the administrator sets the limit.
Why does a 24 MB video bounce?
Email encodes attachments as text (Base64), which inflates them by about a third in transit, and the recipient's server may have a lower limit than yours. Aim a few megabytes under the cap, or lower if you don't know the recipient's provider.
Which format should I email?
